Alumni Family

Geneseo, NY, June 14, 2013

sunny 85 °F

On Thursday we drove to Rochester so I could go to one of my doctors then we settled in at Jim and Deb's house for the weekend. This was Geneseo Reunion Weekend and we had plans to meet up with friends. Jim and Deb made a delicious dinner, then we sat around a campfire laughing and talking. Shirley came late Thursday night and Paul joined us on Friday morning. Geneseo was hopping when we got there Friday, with Geneseo Days in the village and the reunion on campus. We had lunch at the Big Tree inn and walked around town. There was a band in the early evening with one of our friends, Vince, playing the drums, so we listened for quite a while. The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra performed a wonderful concert with fireworks after. And, of course, the sunset was spectacular!

On Saturday we stayed at Jim and Deb's and just visited all morning then drove down to Geneseo in the afternoon. We took a short tour of the campus to see what was new and old. There also was shopping to be done and a BBQ to enjoy. The food was delicious and the company great. A champagne reception in Milne Library followed the BBQ. I was so excited to find out that I could get an alumni library card for Milne, so I got it right away. It was a terrific weekend and we were so glad to be able to enjoy it with our friends!

Family and friends

Sylvan Beach, NY, July 9, 2013

rain 88 °F

It's been a busy few days visiting with family and friends. Just about all of the visiting included eating, of course! Don's brother, Dick, had a family picnic the other day and we had a good time visiting and eating. Justin, Gwen, Callie, Ryan and Khristina were all there, as well. Yesterday was my girlfriend, Sandy's, birthday, and we went to their camp for a cookout with her friends and family. Another good time with more food. Some friends that we taught with had us over to their camp and we visited and enjoyed the day with them.

We have had rain and rain and more rain, but have been luckier than some, because we didn't have any flooding. It has been hot and humid also!

Independence Day, 2013

Hamilton, NY, July 4, 2013

sunny 91 °F

Happy 4th of July to all! I hope y'all appreciate how fortunate we all are to be able to live free in this wonderful country. I also hope everyone enjoyed a nice day with friends and family celebrating our independence.
We drove over hill and dale to the cute little town of Hamilton today for some festivities. Hamilton is where Colgate University lives and it really is pretty. The ride was also lovely, on many roads we had never driven before. There is a Farmers Market every Saturday, but this week it was today. There were some nice wares as well as lots of food, of course. We met Ryan and Khristina at the Market, while Justin, Gwen and Callie watched the parade with Gwen's family. After the parade the town cleared out pretty quickly and we had lunch with Ryan and Khristina. Justin, Gwen and Callie went to Gwen's grandparents house to cool off in the pool.

Don and I spent much of the afternoon just trying to stay cool at the campground and then went into Rome for dinner and ice cream at Nicky Doodles with Linda and Phil. No fireworks for us today, except on tv.
It was hot and humid today, but we had NO rain! Wow!

Beaches and babies

Sylvan Beach, NY, July 2, 2013

rain 78 °F

There was sun this morning and we took a drive to two of the Erie Canal locks, 21 and 22. When we ride bikes on the canal trail we cross over lock 21, so we have never been to 22. Unfortunately there weren't any boats today. Then we took a ride into Sylvan Beach to get gas and made a stop at the Sylvan Beach lighthouse. There are three lighthouses on Oneida Lake, one at each end and one on an island. They were all built around 1917 and have been operating ever since. You can not climb up in them because they are quite narrow with only metal ladders and platforms, no actual staircases. There was a documentary being filmed while we were there, so we were able to see inside, which is not usually open.

And then the rains came . . . Again.
This afternoon Don was walking around the campground and started talking to a man who turned out to be someone we knew years and years ago. We spent some time catching up and found out he will be there all summer. Small world!
This evening Justin, Gwen and Callie arrived from Garner. They did the entire trip today and Callie slept just about all the way! Oh boy, tonight should be fun! They are staying with Ryan and Khristina, so we all got together for pizza and wings at Ryan and Khristina's house and had a yummy time.

And the rains came . . . again

Sylvan Beach, NY, July 1, 2013

rain 72 °F

The weather here has been much of the same-rain. Therefore we have not been doing too much. We did manage to go to see Monsters University the other day with all the children in Rome! It was raining, of course! The movie was good, we really enjoyed it.
Yesterday we actually had some sun, so we took complete advantage. It is about 4.5 miles into Sylvan Beach from the campground, so we biked in, picked up a picnic lunch, and did 'beach' stuff; watched the boats, walked around, played skeeball. We did manage to get 10 miles on our bikes and it was sunny the entire time!
Ryan and Khristina invited us for dinner along with Don's brother, Dick and wife, Julie. Ryan cooked on the grill and we all had a very nice time. Then Ryan helped me do some computer work on my new iPad and on the laptop. Of course it was raining by the time we headed home.
Today we have had lots of rain again, so much that our meeting tonight was cancelled.
The only saving grace is that it is not windy or cold, just rainy. Unfortunately there hasn't been time for all the rivers and creeks to recede, so there have been flood warnings for many days.
